In the flow

Sometimes a painting takes on a life of its own and that's certainly what happened with this one.

While the reference images I collected were mainly of Eli Creek now, what emerged was more reminiscent of how it used to be, before it was better managed and the vegetation along the creek's edge flourished.
It was much more open feeling then, with the sandy banks collapsing into the water beneath the high boardwalks. And yes, it was before the massive crowds. It is straight up, undeniably, 80’s Eli Creek!

I have so many happy memories of floating down this creek as a child with my sisters – looking for the darker, turquoise shaded water for the ‘deep’ pockets, and skimming our way across the shallow sections. It is such a special, special place, with its paperbarks and pandanus, and ever changing, meandering path to the ocean.

This painting will always be very dear to me. The process of creating it felt like one of surrendering to a gentle current, that I trusted was taking me to a new and wonderful place in my art journey. A feeling reminiscent of floating down Eli Creek itself. The greatest surprise though was just how different this painting turned out. It is more abstracted and less representational than my other landscapes, and so enjoyable to paint! It simply flowed, hence the name!

This piece is one for the colour lovers. It is flowy, unpretentious and hits all the right notes for that classic chilled ‘Eli’ vibe.

45 x 45cm acrylics on canvas, wired ready to hang. Framing available on request.
