This beloved piece was over a year in the making and its many layers give it unique interest and charm.
It was inspired by a memory of a place on K’gari that took my breath away, not because of its beauty, but because of its diversity and life. It wasn't pretty, but it spoke to my heart and became the happy place that I went to in my mind.
This painting captures ever changing water levels, vegetation before and after fire, the transition from day to night and, more literally, the crossing over from the east to the west side of the island, hence 'the other side'. To me this artwork tells a story of change, of difference, of growth, and of seeing the beauty in every situation. To me personally, as an artist, it is an ode to perseverance and faith.
